For the first time in its history the charity, which cares for terminally ill cancer and motor neurone disease patients, received less money than it spent last year, by £40,000, despite its expenditure remaining static.
The ‘I Care for Hospice’ campaign seeks to sign Islanders up to pledging a regular amount each month – just £5 pays for a patient’s pain relief for one hour.
At the start of Jersey Hospice Awareness Week, charity chairman Gari Purcell-Jones is appealing to Islanders for their support.
‘If we are to continue to provide our service every day, 365 days a year for anyone who needs it at any time, we need to find a regular source of income,’ he said.
‘We are hoping that “”I Care for Hospice”” strikes a chord with Islanders and can provide that income for us.’ The charity are asking people to pledge £5, £10 or £15 a month to be transferred direct form their bank account.
Mr Purcell-Jones himself is currently in training for the Bedell Cristin Cyle Peru 2005 which aims to raise £1/4 million for the charity in November.
