Only last week manager Dave Phillpot had hailed his team’s 1-1 draw with title-chasers Trinity.
Having lost goalkeeper Casey Hickling and Lee Harvey to the Jersey side this week, however, Phillpot vowed he would ‘never play another game with Island players away.’ ‘It was my choice to play the game,’ he said.
‘I had faith in the players that came in because they’ve all played first division football before.
‘But it wasn’t only them – it was the whole team.
‘I thought we thoroughly deserved it,’ he said.
‘We’re not just a team that stops others playing football.
‘But we know our strengths are collective and not individual.’ Although his side have also beaten Trinity this season, Trigg is keen to look to the next game, rather than bask in the glory of this victory.
‘We’ve got to look to see what we can achieve rather than what we’ve done,’ he said.
‘For the first three games of the season we didn’t get any points, but we’ve got self belief now.’ St Peter’s face a struggling Portuguese side in their next match, but Trigg believes that teams can often drop their standards for the so-called lesser sides in the same way they seem to raise them for the big guns.
He was less forthcoming when quizzed over why this is the case, however, stating: ‘If I knew the answer to that one – I’d be in Ferguson’s job! St Peter went ahead through Gary Freeman and were a goal to the good at half time.
