Jersey Taxi Drivers Association secretary Dave Le Corre said that his members were still prepared to block the redevelopment work – with the backing of the Transport and General Workers Union – unless the committee found a compromise over rank spaces.

And he said that a deal proposed by Environment and Public Services Committee president Senator Philip Ozouf for up to eight spaces on the rank and up to four more on the current motorcycle parking bays had been rejected by the committee.

Mr Le Corre said the taxi drivers had agreed to that deal in principle but rejected the follow-up proposal offered by vice-president Deputy Jerry Dorey for space for three taxis in Library Place.

He said they had not had any contact with Public Services this week and that they were effectively in limbo.

‘If they try to start the work on Monday we shall be picketing Broad Street,’ said Mr Le Corre.

‘Most of our members are in agreement with what we are trying to achieve, which is basically provide a safe haven for us to load up and give the best possible service to the public.’
