Sir Philip Bailhache, who is also president of the Jersey Asia Relief Appeal, said this would allow the Island to help in another way once the final balance of the Island’s Asia Appeal had been transferred to the Red Cross.

Speaking at a concert held in aid of the appeal yesterday, he said final funds would be sent in the first week of February.

‘By then I hope that our small nation will have shown the world a generosity of spirit of which we can all be proud,’ he said.

‘Perhaps at that stage we might see whether, with the assistance of the United Nations, we can find an area in the devastated zone where Jersey might be able to give practical as well as financial assistance for the reconstruction of a broken community.’ The Bailiff also announced that so far the Jersey public had raised £744,429 to add to the States donation of £500,000, bringing the total to £1,244,429.
