Despite losing the opening set Commonwealth Games man Carter claimed his first Jersey Championship singles title and becomes the first man to defeat Coombs-Goodfellow in the event since 1989.
The former champ only missed two competitions, through injury, during that period.
Coombs-Goodfellow roared into a 5-0 lead in the first set and took it 15-8.
But then the pace seemed to get to the veteran and Carter’s confidence grew as he reversed the scoreline in the second and then claimed the title with a 15-9 victory in the decider.
Said Coombs-Goodfellow: ‘Naturally I’m a little disappointed.
I was happy with the way I played but I’m realistic and knew that it would come to an end some time.
‘Maybe Gav would have got it last year if he hadn’t got injured.
He has worked hard and fully deserves it – I’ve got a lot of time for him.’ Carter was ‘over the moon but aching all over’ this morning – he had another tough three-setter later in the evening when he and Clive Dunford inflicted another defeat on Coombs-Goodfellow, who partnered David Luce in the doubles final.
‘It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since I was a junior,’ said Carter.
‘It felt even better beating one of the best players the Island’s ever had – Ian’s a remarkable athlete.
It was a tough match and lasted longer than I anticipated.
He got off to a quick start but then I got back in it and eventually I think I just wore him down.’ But there was still a lot to celebrate in the Coombs-Goodfellow household as Ian’s wife Kerry claimed the triple crown in the ladies events.
After taking the singles for a fifth time earlier in the week she and partner Lucy Burns were awarded a walkover in the ladies doubles when opponents Jodie Mercier and Kim Ashton were forced to withdraw as a result of a leg injury to Mercier.
She then followed this up with victory in the mixed doubles when she and Dunford defeated Carter and junior Kim Ashton 17-14, 15-4.
In the men’s doubles Carter and Dunford came through 8-15, 15-6, 15-11 against Coombs-Goodfellow and Luce.
