Richardson was also top-scorer in yesterday’s Victoria College Trophy competition, so-named because it was presented, in 1996, by former VC teacher, now Jurat, John Le Breton for the best team of four cadets from schools in the British Isles.

Shooting at 600 yards, the Victoria College team beat all their opponents to bring the trophy home.

Said Richardson: ‘This was a fantastic surprise for us because we didn’t expect to be so far ahead.

We were disappointed with our Ashburton result today but to be the best school in Great Britain at 600 yard shooting has made amends,’ It was not just the cadets who were making a name for themselves yesterday, as the Old Victorians were announced as the winners of the Fletcher Trophy, a smallbore rifle competition between all public schools in Britain.

This competition was shot earlier in the season and, while it was thought they had won, the confirmation of their victory was a real bonus, especially as this is only their second win since the competition began.

In Thursday’s Public Schools Veterans Match the Jersey team finished with a disappointing total of 235.20.

Captain Bruce Horwood said: ‘It was a disappointing score for us because we usually only drop five points and expected to be in the top three or four best teams in Great Britain again this year.

We are the best this year at smallbore shooting and hoped to do the double by winning the fullbore event as well, but we failed to master Bisley’s famous fickle winds.’ Jersey Rifle Club take on Britain’s top rifle clubs in the finals of the Astor competition today.

Colin and Cliff Mallett (coaches); Bruce Horwood Class X (top-classification); Peter Stock Class X; Chris Cotillard Class A (next-best classification); Ian Jones Class A; Alex Langley Class O (third-best classification); Andy Nowacki Class O.

Jersey hope to repeat their performance in the qualifiers, where they dropped an average of only one point per shooter as this would probably be a winning score.
