The result of the morning foursomes matches stood as the overall inter-club result leaving Royal Jersey winners of the four-club tournament by one point from Guernsey’s L’Ancresse.

Paul Le Chevalier, the Channel Islands champion and Royal Jersey team captain, said: ‘Play was finally abandoned because of a waterlogged course with our front singles player out on the 11th.

The way things were going I don’t think if we’d played out the match it would have made any difference.

‘At the time we had a commanding lead after the 3-1 morning foursomes success against L’Ancresse and we were doing very well in the singles matches as well.

‘All the teams were a little depleted and that happens sometimes and the reason it did this year was because two clubs had players playing for Hampshire while others had other commitments.

‘We have a good strength in depth and the team played well.

It’s never easy winning in Guernsey but we did it and the team can be proud of their efforts.’ Royal Jersey were unbeaten in all three of their away matches this season.

Travelling to Guernsey with a point after a six-all draw at La Moye they defeated Royal Guernsey 7-5 on Saturday after they tied the foursomes 2-2 and won the singles 5-3.

Christy McLaughlin beat Bobby Eggo in the singles one-up.

McLaughlin said: ‘It had a great start winning the opening four holes, Bobby three-putted the first two greens while I won the fourth with a birdie.

It was a case of closing the game out then and although Bobby got back to one hole at the 14th I achieved my aim.

‘It’s a great victory overall for the club, especially as we had no matches at home.’ La Moye drew six-all with L’Ancresse on Saturday while yesterday they lost the foursomes to Royal Guernsey 3-1.

Meanwhile former footballers continue to excel at Les Mielles Golf Club.

Following on from ex-Stoke City professional Bill Asprey winning the Seniors competition last week, former England U23 and Tottenham Hotspur striker Chris Jones won the July Medal competition on Saturday.

Jones shot a super gross 71 off his seven handicap giving him a nett 64 which reduces his handicap to 6.2.

Rivalry at the Jones home must be strong at present as Chris is the father of in-form La Moye junior Adam.

Eighteen-year-old Adam is down to four handicap after winning La Moye’s Tuesday Evening League Stableford competition last Tuesday with 45 points.
