Playing at Grainville, the CI were defeated by two wickets with the visitors coming home with just one ball remaining of their 45 overs.

CI skipper Keith Dennis, who made 48, and Guernsey’s Mike Webber put on 100 runs for the second wicket before Dennis was caught by wicket-keeper Dave Brogden.

Dennis said: ‘It was a game we really should have won.

We should have been looking to get in the region of 250 runs and unfortunately we only got 208.

‘Mike batted really well, it was his first Over-50s half century and that will, I’m sure, give him confidence for future matches.

I was just getting going when I got out and John Taylor also had a great knock of 45 on his début.

‘We were not up to our best bowling and fielding and that coupled with not getting enough runs has proved costly.’ Right-arm medium pace bowler John Tall was the CI’s best bowler by far taking five wickets for 36 runs in nine overs, including two maidens.

The Channels Islands play away to Hampshire on Wednesday.

Jersey’s Greg Sykes replaces John Taylor, who is unavailable.
