It balmy conditions and on a course in excellent condition, the former professional won an excellent match 3 and 2 against club colleague Gavin O’Neill, also a former professional.

Le Chevalier took the championship for the fourth time to book a date in the Channel Islands title decider with Guernsey’s David Rowlinson in two weeks.

Jerseyman Le Chevalier was two up after three holes thanks to birdies at the second and third and although O’Neill had chances to pull the deficit back, his putting let him down when in promising positions.

After going three down at the 11th, O’Neill got back to two down on the next hole only for Le Chevalier to hit back to win the 14th with a 40-foot birdie.

Le Chevalier, whose round included five birdies and a double-bogey on the 12th, said: ‘It gets harder to win every year, but today I put my success down to my putting.

‘I holed the putts when it mattered.

It all came together at the right time for me whereas it didn’t for Gavin.

I was pleased with the round and I managed to keep Gavin out.

He didn’t win a hole until the 12th.

‘It’s been another really tough weekend of competition – I had hard matches with Bob Wickings, Richard Ramskill and now Gavin.’ O’Neill, on his Island final début, said: ‘I’m disappointed to lose, but it was down to the putting and nothing else.

I played well tee to green but my work on the greens really let me down at times.

Nothing seemed to go in for me and at this level if you want to win, the putts have to go in.’ ‘Paul is a very good golfer and he putted better than me.

If there’s a next time, hopefully I can putt more accurately and win the title.’
