Deputy Rob Duhamel says that the previous committee decided the toilets should remain as a fitting memorial to Philip Le Sueur, who, as Constable in the 1830s, was instrumental in introducing sanitation into St Helier.
‘The whole raison d’être of the Broad Street improvement was to have a local celebration of the work done by Constable Le Sueur in setting up a sewage system,’ said the Deputy.
‘When it was discussed the committee felt that it should remain as toilets and it was proposed that the block should be a listed building and should not be changed into a hamburger stall, a tourism kiosk or anything else.
‘I think the committee are being pushed heavily by the present Constable (Simon Crowcroft) to do exactly the alternative.’
