A FORMER Miss World contestant-turned-international DJ is returning to Jersey to perform at The Drift next Saturday.

Leicester-born Sally Kettle – otherwise known as DJ Sally K – will take to the decks from 8 pm and she is promising Islanders a range of tunes, from old-school hip-hop to house and disco.

The former model was crowned Miss England at the age of 19 but two years earlier her love for DJing had already started to develop when she bought her first turntables.

She went on to compete in Miss World in South Africa before she moved to London, where she met the DJs the Boilerhouse Boys, who got her DJ career rolling.

Sally K has held residencies at several London clubs, has co-presented BBC Liquid News with Jenny Bond and has DJ’d in front of tens of thousands of fans at three UEFA Champions League football finals.

But now she is coming to Jersey, where she has played before, saying that she was suitably impressed with the nightlife here.

The Drift event is free, doors open at 8 pm, strictly over-21s only.

Sally K spoke to the JEP’s Nightlife about her gig, where she will be supported by residents DJ Craig Alder and Tam:

What are you hoping from the crowd in Jersey?

Well obviously I want my set to be well received.

Providing a service that gets people dancing and encourages them to have fun is a massive job, but I love the challenge.

Sometimes I can’t only play the music I want to hear – that’s the hard bit!

What do you know about Jersey’s night life?

I played here a year ago at the Royal Yacht.

Before my set, I was given the grand tour of the local night life.

It’s great! Loads of fun, lots of people and the Island has a lovely feel to it.

The music varies, more on the commercial side, but I like that.

What can Islanders expect from your set?

A bit of everything, music-wise.

It will be fun and there will be a bit of Michael Jackson, old-school hip-hop, house and a sprinkle of disco.

I may even spoil you with my new track that’s coming out in the next couple of months.

Who are your DJ heroes?

Marcello Marchitto. He plays at Sa Trinxa on Las Salinas Beach in Ibiza.

I love his vibe and gradual grow on deep house music.

Also Mark Ronson – he’s an amazing producer and I hope he’ll continue to make music until I’m unable to hear.

What was it like DJing at the Champions League finals?

Goose bump material! I played three of the finals, in Athens, Rome and Moscow.

The atmosphere was epic, unique. It’s wasn’t about getting people to dance, it was about providing a subtle atmosphere that slowly built the crowd up to lead them on to watching the biggest match in world club football.

What were you involved in before DJ-ing?

I was Miss England, which gave me my place to compete in Miss World.

To this day, it was probably the best experience of my life. I was 20 years old.

I travelled a lot with pageants at the time – Singapore, Las Vegas, the Philippines – but nothing compared to travelling to Sun City in South Africa for a month to compete in Miss World.

My roommate was Miss USA and we had a ball. I retired from pageants after competing in this most prestigious event.

Would you prefer to be a DJ or Miss World?

Miss World was the best experience of my life, but DJing for 2,000 people at the Birmingham NEC back to back with Pete Tong was mind-blowing.

These days I would have to say DJing.

I love the buzz I get from playing every week, and now I’m getting into producing, the possibilities are endless.

ELECTRONIC music festival Reasons enjoyed a successful debut last weekend as around 2,500 Islanders turned out to Coronation Park.

The four-stage event has been hailed as a huge success by co-organisers Ben Newman and John O’Connell, and it seems that plans are already in place for the event to return next year.

Reasons, and the after-parties at Rojo and Havana, received a great reception on social media from Islanders who attended the event:

Lyle de la Cloche, events organiser and host of the BLKOUT stage at the festival:

‘Reasons was a breath of fresh air for this island, the vibe around the whole park was unbelievable!

‘Without doubt Reasons has well and truly cemented itself in the hearts of us all in Jersey.’

DJ Lee Pinglaux:

‘HOW GOOD was Reasons!!?? Amazing place finally being used to its potential and such a hot day. Plus Rojo was absolutely banging after. Highlight of the Jersey summer for me, great work Ben and John, seemed to run like a well-oiled machine – so impressed. Bring on 2016.’
