A DEPUTY who has campaigned for better protection for migrant workers is to seek re-election in St Helier South.

Deputy Beatriz Porée was elected for the first time in 2022 alongside her Reform Jersey colleagues Deputies Sam Mézec and Tom Coles as well as Deputy David Warr.

She has served on the Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel and subsequently the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel. She also chaired the Work Permit Holder Welfare Review Panel.

During the last States sitting of the term, Deputy Porée received strong support for her proposed review into the feasibility of issuing work permits in the employee’s name instead of their employer.

She said: “I have the immense pleasure to announce my decision to stand for re-election. My decision to stand again is grounded on my on-going commitment to serve the people of Jersey, and my responsibility to represent our community effectively.

The past four years spent as a Deputy of St Helier South has been the biggest honour and privilege of my career. A role that has given me a deeper understanding of the issues people face day to day, as well as the importance of providing steady, accountable leadership.

“Serving the community as well as building relationships with residents, organisations and colleagues have supported my sense of duty and motivated me to stand again.”

Prior to entering politics, Deputy Porée set up the Market Juice Bar in the Central Market, which she continues to run.

She added: “I intend to stand as a Reform Jersey candidate and continue to contribute to the ongoing legislative work, collaborative policy making, and the long-term engagement on issues that affect the Island’s future.

“To continue in my role will allow me to see those initiatives through. This matters to me personally, because consistency and collaboration help deliver steady, thoughtful public service to the benefit of all Islanders.”

Party Leader, Deputy Mézec said – “Deputy Porée has been a trailblazer. I have seen first-hand her tireless work to give a voice for those who have until now been under-represented in her politics. It is really important for Jersey that someone with her experience and expertise continues to be able to serve in the States and make a difference.”

Deputy Coles has confirmed he will also be seeking re-election in St Helier South on 7 June. The other incumbents – Deputies Mézec and Warr – will be standing for Senator and St Helier Constable respectively.
