GLOBAL Entrepreneurship Week takes place in November and is described as the world’s largest festival of its type, celebrated in more than 160 countries.

The event is a massive opportunity to showcase and empower entrepreneurs in every country and community across the globe, especially those individuals who face barriers or may never have considered starting a business before.

What makes a successful start-up owner?

Individuals who establish their own firm will each have a unique entrepreneurial journey, but researchers believe there are a few traits which are common across most people who go on to make a success of their new venture.

One such trait is revealed from the morning habits of effective business owners and has been summarised by the statement: “If you want to change the world, start by making your bed.”

Completing a task first thing in the morning, such as making your bed, provides an instant sense of accomplishment. This early win boosts confidence and motivation, putting individuals in a proactive mindset. It reinforces the belief that we have control over our day and can achieve our goals.

Additionally, a well-made bed symbolises order and organisation. Entrepreneurs typically thrive in an organised environment as it promotes better decision-making and efficiency.

Finally, this routine cultivates attention to detail, the hallmark of many a successful entrepreneur. Whether it is product design, customer service or wealth management, the little things matter.

Positive habits lead to success

An entrepreneur will typically lead a team of employees, and it is the habits and conduct of the leader which set the example.

Demonstrating self-discipline, attention to detail and a strong work ethic – a reflection of the regular bed maker – inspires others to succeed.

Reference to work ethic brings us on to another set of behaviours most successful individuals – entrepreneurs or not – exhibit, which requires no talent. These include punctuality, preparation, a positive attitude and the drive and passion to make things happen.

Looked at another way, part of the value of Global Entrepreneurship Week is in encouraging us all to look in the mirror – once we have made our bed – and to realise: “I can bring that business idea to life.”
