A ST Peter convenience store could almost double in size, if a planning application is granted.
The M&S Simply Food shop on Grande Route de Saint-Pierre would grow from a 374m2 shop to a total of 706m2, plus 12 additional parking spaces.
The retail space would be extended inside the existing building, applicants SandpiperCI and Axis Mason added in the planning documents, which also argue that extending the former car showroom “strengthens the role of St Peter as a self-sufficient parish centre, enabling residents to meet everyday needs locally and reducing reliance on St Helier”.
The current layout, the application reads, limits the ability to use upgraded fridges and stock fresh food and a broader range of products.

Also included within the proposals is a move to improve the “pedestrian and cycle connectivity through the site” and creating eight extra bicycle parking spaces.
The application has already gone through a community consultation with a display board available in the shop and an online questionnaire receiving “minimal feedback”, the planning documents state.
Responses showed “a steady level of support for the extension, alongside a clear recognition of the benefits that improved accessibility, increased retail space and parking could bring”.
As part of the proposal, the owners also included a commissioned piece of art that would trace the historic field boundary and create “a quiet moment of connection to the landscape’s heritage” for people walking in.
