MORE than 50 riders descended on Grève de Lecq Woods over the weekend for the Mountain Biking Jersey Enduro Mash Up — and they were met with two very different days of racing.
Saturday’s action belonged to the Island’s young riders, who enjoyed dry and sunny conditions as they kicked off proceedings in style.
Joey Lloyd showed impressive composure to claim the Under-8 title, while the Under-10 category proved one of the most competitive of the morning. Oscar Bisson and Charlie Cornick traded fast laps throughout, but it was Bisson who edged ahead to record the quickest time.
The Under-12 race produced the closest finish of the day. Five riders continually bettered their times in a thrilling contest, with Artie Roberts eventually snatching victory by just two seconds from Finn Le Chevalier. Archie Bisson was a mere three hundredths of a second further back in third.
Fraser Pledger powered his way to the Under-14 crown in a time of 45.856 seconds, with Theo Roberts close behind in second. Evan Osmand topped the Youth standings with a confident and controlled display.
If Saturday was about sunshine and speed, Sunday was a very different test.
Overnight rain transformed the woodland trails, presenting senior riders with slick, technical conditions that demanded grit as much as skill. After practice runs, competitors launched into their timed efforts — but the course quickly cut up.
Organiser Jay Cracknell admitted the weather played its part. “The start line soon tore up, with the first corner becoming as slick as ice. Many riders chose to hop off and run,” he said.
As the rain eased, the battle for the podium intensified. In the end, just two tenths of a second separated the top two. Josh Morris, returning after a spell away from racing, secured victory in dramatic fashion, with rising talent Devon Vibert pushing him all the way in second. Leonardo Soares completed the podium in third.
James Dilks, Liam Cadoret and Alex Plaster impressed on their analogue set-ups in the senior category, while Josh Lee claimed the junior honours with a determined ride that showcased skills honed in other off-road disciplines.
In the veterans’ races, Darius Urbanek took the 40+ title, Krzysztof Jeromkin won the 50+ category and Giuseppe Danna topped the 60+ standings.
Special mention went to 14-year-old Alex Le Sueur, the youngest rider competing on Sunday, who put up a spirited performance against far more experienced opposition in treacherous conditions.
Organisers from Jersey Cycling and Mountain Biking Jersey have already set their sights on the next Enduro event in September.
They also extended thanks to Normandy Rescue, local landowners, Vélo Flambé and the riders who continue to support the Island’s growing off-road calendar.
