Parishioners had left their entry, Midnight on Wednesday, outside the public hall for everybody to look at, with the intention of leaving it there for a week.

However, less than a day after the Moonlight Parade, vandals sent the float careering into the wall of the Rectory by releasing the brakes. They also ripped the head off the float’s centrepiece, a standing Buddha, and threw it into the road.

St Martin’s Battle of Flowers chairman Percy Gicquel said that the damage had been carried out by ‘mindless hooligans’. He was woken up at midnight on Saturday to be told the news.

• Anyone with information about the damaged float should contact the police on 612612.
