From Alan West-Gillham.

READERS of the JEP are indeed well served by columnists of the calibre of Christine Herbert, Ben Quérée and Anna Plunkett-Cole. Anna’s article of Saturday 7 June was truly well balanced in view of the serious implications for the Island

Again, the Chief Minister is found wanting in showing the necessary leadership of the Assembly, thus making clear that the method of election for that position, while ignoring the votes of the electorate, is quite unacceptable.

For Senator Walker to state that the procedures of this huge development were totally safeguarded is nonsense. Has he not heard of such things as ‘caveat emptor’ or even ‘if it sounds too good to be true . . .’?

Like Deputy Baudains, I have no idea of the probity of the developers. There has never been a project of this size in the Island. But I would assure him, from experience in what seems another life of winding-up contracts for a major UK bank, that when it comes to safeguards, the only advice which immediately springs to mind is ‘how long is a piece of string?’ in terms of assessing time and cost.

Further, having been a creditor director of a local company involved in an en désastre, I do not believe that the Viscount’s department could handle anything of the possible scale envisaged. So could this mean further unquantified consultants?

All this only serves to prove that the system of a ministerial assembly is not effective.

In the event, whereas the idea of a referendum to determine whether the Island should adopt European time is interesting, there is a much more pressing, in fact crucial, need for a referendum which would determine whether to accept the Clothier Report in its entirety.

I believe that this valuable, well researched report would produce candidates of the necessary calibre that is so vital for taking the Island forward into a secure, positive and democratic future, all regrettably absent at this time.
