Figures published yesterday at the end of the annual December crackdown on drink-driving show that 16 of the 20 people arrested were male.
In December 2006, 12 people were charged with drink driving, of whom 11 were men.
During 2007 as a whole, 182 of the 215 people charged with the offence were men. In 2006, 192 of the 218 were male and in 2005, the figure was 206 out of 240.
So far this December, nine of the 20 people arrested have been charged with drink driving. Of the remainder, four were released without charge after blood tests showed them to be under the legal limit. The police are still awaiting the results of blood tests that will determine whether the other seven will be charged.
