THERE are more university graduates returning to Jersey with teaching qualifications than there are jobs.

Newly qualified teachers are struggling to find jobs in primary schools when they finish studying, and one of the reasons is thought to be falling pupil numbers.

A total of 38 Jersey teachers are graduating this summer, 26 of whom are primary-school trained. A small number of these have successfully found posts for September and some have chosen to find jobs in the UK.

However, 13 of them are currently trying to find a job in the Island – on top of ten teachers who qualified last year and have still not found jobs. Education’s head of evaluation and standards, Cliff Chipperfield (pictured), said that he had been at the department for eight years and that this had been only a recent change.
