On his début in the competition, the 64-year-old semi-retired builder lifted the title on his home course at St Brelade on Friday after winning a closely-contested final 3 and 2 against Royal Jersey’s Terry Smith.

Leading one-up after nine holes of the final, McCarthy turned the screw further with birdies at the tenth, 13th and 14th holes and by being three-up at the 16th the match ran away from Smith, a former champion, when he narrowly missed an eight-foot putt to keep the game alive.

McCarthy, who now represents Jersey in the individual inter-island final at L’Ancresse, Guernsey, next month, said: ‘It’s the first time I’ve taken part in the championship.

I think it was a case of first time lucky.

‘But it was a good final, Terry and I have played a lot of times so we know each other’s games.

Conditions were good and I won it on the back nine with three birdies in nine holes.

‘The Style Group have sponsored this event for around 15 years now and it continues to go from strength to strength; they do a fantastic service for seniors golf.’ A total of 86 played in a qualifying competition last Tuesday at La Moye with Smith qualifying with an excellent 77 gross score to be joined in the knock-out stages by McCarthy, Jeremy Turpin and Gerald Binding.

In the semi-finals last Thursday, McCarthy beat Turpin 3 and 1 while Smith defeated Binding by one hole.

There was a double success for La Moye as John Searson won the Super Seniors Championship.

The 74-year-old returned the tremendous qualifying score of 76 gross nett 64 to lead the qualifiers by eight shots.

In the final, against Royal Jersey’s Mike Jones, Searson was never threatened after being 5-up after nine holes.

Jones managed to get two holes back but the lead was too much and Searson held on to win 3 and 2.

A total of 117 entries were received for both competitions.

Winners for the various age flights were: Vardon Flight: Peter Darley (La Moye).

Ray Flight: Richard Villain (La Moye).

Boomer Flight: Graham Holloway (Royal Jersey).

Horton Flight: Alex Milligan (Royal Jersey).

Braid Flight: Peter Green (La Moye) and Laffoley Flight: Arthur Poole (Royal Jersey).

The Jersey Golf Union hosts the inter-island seniors match at La Moye on 12 and 13 September.
