Joao Henrique Gaspar (33) went on a half-hour rampage after being thrown out of St James Wine Bar on 9 May.

He twice drove at pedestrians and was chased through St Helier by police as a screaming female passenger begged him to stop, Crown Advocate Andrew Belhomme told the court on Friday.

Police placed a car into the middle of the road to try to force Gaspar to a halt, but he headed straight at them, forcing them to pull out of his path.

Gaspar drove through red lights and crashed into the front of Café Lisboa in James Street, injuring his two passengers – but still he did not stop.

He drove the smoking and battered car away as police continued their pursuit.

The car eventually screeched to a halt after hitting a pavement in Don Street.

A front wheel had snapped off its axle.

One of the passengers, Eduardo Dos Santos, then told police: ‘He’s crazy.

He just wanted to get away from the police.’
