The States are due to debate new employment laws next week but the Transport and General Workers Union say that if they are approved in their current format, they are confident they can have Jersey ‘condemned’ internationally ‘for denying people their human rights’.

The TGWU’s regional secretary, Andy Frampton, says the union will take Jersey to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and a number of other bodies to complain about a denial of workers rights within the proposed legislation.

He has also warned that the union will watch how individual States Members vote next week and will tell their nearly 5,000 members ‘to support those politicians who support us’ when the Island goes to the polls later this year.

Mr Frampton dismissed as ‘a sham’ the results of a recent consultation process ordered by the States on the proposals.

States Members voted to refer the legislation back earlier this year when the Employment and Social Security Committee originally brought it to the House.

Members were concerned that issues raised by the TGWU had not been properly addressed and wanted the committee to negotiate further.

That process is now complete, but Mr Frampton said the issues raised were ignored.

He said Jersey was now on the verge of introducing ’employer-biased’ legislation.
