Advocate Ashley Hoy, for the applicants, said that eating and drinking habits had changed since 1993 when the pub in St James’s Street was granted taverner’s and restaurant licences.

At that time, one of the conditions was that the Admiral’s beer garden must close at 6 pm.

Since then, a number of licensed premises in the area had been granted licences, making it possible for them to offer their customers terrace drinking facilities.

‘It is only fair and proper that the Admiral is able to compete on a level playing field,’ he said.
