All movement of live birds and hatching eggs in and out of the Island will need licensing under the new regulations, which will come into effect a week today.

After a meeting last night, the Environment and Public Services Committee decided to impose the restrictions on all live birds as a precautionary matter.

Carcasses that have been cooked or prepared for cooking will not be affected by the controls.

At short notice, the committee can stop the movement of all birds, but in the meantime the licence scheme will stay in operation.

But the licences must be applied for 15 days in advance of any planned travel, which, as feared, will prevent any outside birds competing in this year’s Poultry and Ornithological Society show at the Royal Showground in Trinity on 3 December.
