The grey seal pup – named Ellie – was saved by a team from British Divers Marine Life Rescue Jersey in December after she was spotted in a swell off Plémont.

The underweight pup, which had been separated from her mother, was then transported to Guernsey’s animal shelter to begin rehabilitation alongside Joey – another seal pup that was brought back from the Ecréhous reef in November.

Despite receiving constant care for the past few months, Ellie was struggling to eat and died earlier this week.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said that the shelter was ‘extremely saddened’ to inform everyone of the pup’s death.

‘Unlike the other seal pups she has really struggled eating and putting [on] her weight, despite around-the-clock care from the GSPCA team,’ he said.

‘It is devastating when an animal passes away, as we all care so much for each of the animals in our care.’

The shelter is still looking after Joey – the remaining Jersey pup – as well as two other seals called Titan and India.

‘Each pup seems to be making good progress but each arrived extremely poorly and require a huge amount of care,’ said Mr Byrne.

‘We will of course keep everyone up to date on Joey, Titan and India’s progress.’
