Rugby reaction: Final countdown after best league finish

The South African, delighted with Jersey’s 28-17 final day victory over Richmond in the Championship, will now be conferring with forwards coach Alex Rae on how to bring down the Irish giants.

Competition for places is strong, although it’s pretty clear who the starting XV will be, fitness not withstanding. Of Saturday’s match squad, only ever-present Nick Haining and Tongan centre Kuki Ma’afu, who both came off the bench, can expect to start on Friday.

The final is, of course, a lot more than just the icing on Jersey’s cake, despite their fifth season in the Championship again showing irrefutable proof of the club’s remarkable progress.

Said Biljon: ‘The players have come together superbly well this season, overcoming adversity to achieve tremendous results. They can all be proud of helping the club to a best-ever finish. There has been real progression.

‘The downside was that perhaps some of players were over-anxious to perform on the day and certainly the set-piece did not function well. But it’s all about preparing for the challenge of a cup final now.’
