Athlete limit set for 2018 Commonwealth Games

Earlier this month, the Commonwealth Games Federation announced that 6,600 competitors will be invited to attend the 21st staging of the quadrennial celebration of sport, and 33 of those will be flying the flag for the largest Channel Island.

Athletes contesting team events – such as rugby sevens, netball and volleyball – are not included in their nation’s allocation.

Although the restrictions mean Jersey will have a smaller contingent than they took to Glasgow 2014 – a record 40 competitors travelled to Scotland – Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey president Paul du Feu believes the Island have a fair allocation.

‘Except for Glasgow, which was exceptional, 33 isn’t a bad size team for us,’ said du Feu.
