In what is arguably one of the most important years for the sport locally, Jersey Rowing Club captain Clive Russell wants to make the 2016 edition of the 16-mile open water challenge one to remember.
The event, scheduled for Saturday 2 July and sponsored by Willis Towers Watson, comes before a planned entry into the World Rowing Coastal Championships in October and adds weight to JRC’s hopes of remaining based at Les Galots – a site shrouded in controversy as plans for redevelopment at La Collette continue to be discussed.
Special plans are in place to mark the occasion, including the restoration of a Sark to Jersey plaque at Bonne Nuit, and Russell is keen for former rowers to join forces with the 250-plus competitors.
‘For the Sark to Jersey we’re going to have 70-plus boats and around 250 competitors, maybe even 300. And all of those have a guard boat, so it will be a fleet of 150 boats off the coast of Sark. There has never been anything that sort of size before,’ he said.
