Football: Reds raring to go

The Jersey Football Combination host the Essex and Suffolk Border League in the second round of the competition with Thompson expected to replace Chris Andrews, who recently stood down from all representative football, in Dave Kennedy and Paul Brannan’s side.

Thompson, who returned to the Island on a whistle-stop visit a fortnight ago to play in the Premiership against St Ouen, returns again today ahead of tomorrow’s second-round fixture which starts at 4.30 pm.

2009/10: QF – beaten by Dorset 1-0

2011/12: Champions – 2-1 victory over the Isle of Man in the final

2013/14: QF – beaten by Dorset 1-0

Thompson, who is studying law at the University of Manchester, said: ‘I can’t wait; I’ve been missing training and playing football with all the Jersey lads.

‘It’s nice to be playing in Manchester because it’s a good standard but you can’t really beat playing at Springfield in front of all the Jersey fans.

‘I think we will gel together well and I believe we have the ability to do well in this competition.’

Thompson, who represented Jersey in the Island Games in the summer, said: ‘I’m excited and really looking forward to the challenge.

‘Jack and Luke would be a massive loss to any team because, as everyone knows, they are very good players because of the quality they possess.

Euan Van der Vliet, Craig Fletcher, Scott McClurg, Pierce Cummins, Stuart André, Calvin Weir, Cavaghn Miley, Jack Cannon, Michael Weir, Adam Trotter, Reuben Pestana, Kieran Lester, Craig Russell, Luke Campbell, Max Thompson and Rupert Murray.

So how is Thompson’s form?

‘I’m eager to just keep on learning, keep on improving my skills and keep on honing them down.

‘I’m playing for the first team here in Manchester; it’s a very good standard and the coach is at Manchester United with the Youth squad so the teaching and the coaching is all very good.

‘Our coach takes the under-14s at United; he puts on some very good sessions and as you’d expect he knows what he is talking about.

‘There are a good bunch of lads here in Manchester and most of them are Academy drop outs so the standard of football here is very good.’
