Rugby: Jersey score six on pre-season finale

Following a heavy defeat for the Island’s ladies (43-0) and a superb opening Zoo Sports Shield triumph for Jersey Athletic in the Blackheath triple-header (32-21), Harvey Biljon’s first XV wasted no time in setting the pace in their tie against the Londoners’ National One outfit.

Tua Otto crossed over to open the scoring with four minutes played after a fine grubber kick through from Penberthy, and once Blackheath fullback Mike Mvelase had leveled the scores it was Tom Howe that excelled in the making of the Reds’ second – dodging and weaving from right to left on a 40 metre run before handing over to Jersey’s Samoan centre.

Penberthy provided for himself just before the break – running onto his own looping ball forward to touch down by the JRFC scoreboard – and the fullback grabbed a second after scrum half Jack Moates had claimed Jersey’s fourth with an hour played.

James Freeman again benefited off the back of a driving maul for the sixth (as he did last week against Scarlets); adding another five points before Penberthy struck the extras in the last play of the game.

Report and reaction in Monday’s JEP.
