Convicted abuser ‘preyed on victim’s age and vulnerability’

St Helier parishioner Paul Trevor Moore was convicted of six counts of procuring an act of gross indecency and four counts of indecent assault yesterday following a three-day Assize trial in the Royal Court.

The jury of seven women and five men took more than four hours to come to their split decision.

As Commissioner Sir Michael Birt announced the guilty verdicts, the girl’s grandmother, who was sitting in the public gallery flanked by investigating officer DC Lidia Szejko, broke down in tears. Moore, who was stood in the dock wearing a dark suit, did not react.

The 37-year-old, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, was remanded in custody and placed on the Sex Offenders Register following the verdicts. His sentencing date is due to be set on Friday 11 August.

Following the verdict the NSPCC said: ‘It is clear that Moore preyed on his victim’s age and vulnerability to carry out his appalling abuse of her.

‘The young girl in this case has shown tremendous courage in speaking out about what happened and her bravery has helped bring her attacker to justice. Sexual abuse ruins childhoods and the impact can last a lifetime, but help for victims is available.’
