TV’s Dr Hilary urges Jersey men to regard their GPs as friends

The doctor, who has been a regular on breakfast television since the 1980s, spoke out as he visited the Island to promote the Hidden Hearing wellness programme at the Lido Medical Centre – designed to encourage good health in the over-55s.

Free hearing tests and health checks were carried out, and Dr Jones was on hand to answer any health-related questions.

Speaking generally about health issues, Dr Jones said men were particularly reluctant to see their GP – with some living with health conditions for ten years before consulting a doctor.

He said: ‘Men are still so bad at acknowledging they have a health problem because they see it as a sign of weakness and they just presume the problem will go away.

‘We need to change men’s attitude towards their health.

‘We could prevent a lot of illnesses if men saw their GPs earlier. We need to get men to see doctors as friends rather than someone they are embarrassed to talk with.’
