Plans for major town housing development submitted

Last month Andium announced its intention to build 165 one- and two-bedroom affordable homes on the former Ann Court site between the Jersey Arts Centre and Ann Street.

And now the proposals, which have cost £212,250 in planning fees, have been submitted.

The development also includes proposals for underground parking over two levels, with 137 short-term public spaces for shoppers and 90 for residents.

If the new development is given the green light it would result in a loss of about 60 spaces, while a row of four houses in Ann Street as well as Toddy’s Bar – formerly the Oddfellows public house – would be demolished.

When the proposals were unveiled Housing Minister Anne Pryke said that she was ‘immensely pleased’ and added that the development would ‘provide new affordable and high-quality homes for Islanders’ and would ‘support further regeneration’ of the area. The site was previously occupied by States Housing development Ann Court, which was demolished in 2008.

Under the plans Andium also plan to close Providence Street, which leads into Belmont Road and introduce a new one-way traffic flow around the site. The housing provider says the move would improve traffic in the area and make it safer for pedestrians.
