Gorst: ‘I want to complete my term of office’

Senator Ian Gorst is facing a battle to save his job after 14 backbenchers backed a move to oust him from the Island’s top political position.

He has faced mounting pressure after a string of high-profile decisions left a number of backbenchers disillusioned with his leadership while persistent rumours of political unrest within the Council of Ministers threaten to further undermine the Chief Minister’s position.

Senator Gorst said ensuring the Island’s interests are represented during Brexit negotiations is a key priority as he enters the final 12 months of his second term in the role.

‘I have been privileged to serve as Chief Minister since 2011 and I hope to complete this term of office so that the government’s planned programme of work can reach a successful conclusion.

‘My priorities are to maintain a strong economy that provides good jobs for Islanders and enables government to make people’s lives better, to care for the vulnerable and to protect Jersey’s unique environment,’ he said.
