States throw out reform plans

The plans, originally put forward by Senator Lyndon Farnham, would have seen the Island’s eight Senators maintained, and the Assembly reduced by just one seat with the 28 Deputies elected in six super-constituencies.

However, Privileges and Procedures Committee chairman Constable Len Norman opted to withdraw the proposals after Members rejected the law changes which would have reduced the number of Deputies. The article was rejected by 23 votes to 17.

It means that there will be no changes to the composition of the States before the May 2018 election. The proposition to withdraw the debate was approved by 30 votes to ten.
