D-Day veterans remember the sacrifices of 73 years ago

The ever-dwindling ‘band of brothers’ was down to just six this year, ranging in age from 93 to 102.

The chairman of the Jersey Normandy Veterans Association, Clive Kemp (96), said: ‘It is lovely that we keep on remembering D-Day and that there are still a few of us who are able to come here. It is something that we have to be very thankful for.’

Before the short ceremony began the almost 100-strong crowd observed the one-minute national silence to remember the victims of the London Bridge terror attack.

BBC journalist Chris Stone, a local military historian who has helped several Second World War veterans to write their memoirs, spoke during the ceremony.

He likened the bravery of the D-Day veterans to the policeman and members of the public who fought to overcome the terrorists on Saturday night.
