Charging for cervical smear tests is ‘illogical’

Maryann Lumsden, professor of medical education and gynaecology at the University of Glasgow, said that the tests should be free.

And today, Health Minister Andrew Green said that the issue of charging for cervical screenings was being looked at as part of two pieces of work being conducted by his department.

Islanders can pay as much as £57.50 for the test whereas in the UK it is free on the NHS. The Health Department also offers cervical screening at Le Bas centre at a cost of £16.

Last year, 7,000 smear tests were carried out in Jersey, which is 70% of women due to have a test in 2016. Of the tests that were carried out, one third were done at Le Bas.

Although the cost of the test is considerably cheaper at Le Bas than at most GP surgeries, Ms Lumsden says it is wrong that women in Jersey should have to pay for the test at all.

And Deputy Jackie Hilton, who sits on the Health and Social Security Scrutiny Panel, said £57.50 was a lot of money for women to have to pay.

Ms Lumsden said: ‘Cervical screenings should definitely be free because the test isn’t that expensive. It’s illogical that women in Jersey should have to pay for the screening.

‘The screening can pick up early signs of cervical cancer which is preventable and no-one should be dying from it.

‘It’s a real shame women are paying for the test in Jersey and that is a false economy. I think the cost would definitely put people off.’

The Health Department are currently working on a Contraception Strategy and Sustainable Primary Care Strategy which will look at the Island’s cervical screening programme.
