Another summer of sea lettuce on the way?

Sea lettuce has long blighted Jersey’s coastline with tonnes appearing on the beach between West Park and La Haule each year.

In an attempt to combat the issue the States are due to dig furrows in the bay with the aim of preventing sea lettuce spores from settling in nutrient-rich water and instead force them back to the sea.

However, Jacqui Carrel, environmental scientist for Save Our Shoreline, claims that the furrows are not being put in the right place.

Mrs Carrel said: ‘Simply put, it is too little too late. It is really good that they are going to do something but it is being done in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

‘They should be digging near the Bellozanne outfall in the middle of the bay rather than at the western end of St Aubin’s Bay where the nutrient make-up and tidal flow is completely different.

‘They should have also started this six weeks ago at the beginning of spring when the sea lettuce was not yet beginning to take hold.’
