Truck driver in court after ‘brakes failed’ on Victoria Avenue

Edward Jerome Lemprière, of Route de St Jean, St Lawrence, has been charged with using a vehicle while it was in a dangerous condition.

Centenier Norman Laverack told the court that the truck was stopped at about midday at the Victoria Avenue junction of Rue du Galet on 18 January.

The vehicle was allegedly found to be carrying a load of 4.7 tons when it should have been limited to 3.5 tons.

Mr Laverack also said that while DVS were testing the front brakes, it is alleged that brake fluid escaped and a total brake failure occurred. The Centenier added that the brakes were also allegedly corroded as was the handbrake.

It is also alleged that all six tyres were under-inflated, that there was a cut in the side wall of the nearside front tyre and that the tread on that tyre was also below the legal limits.

In addition there was allegedly severe corrosion under the battery and also around the wheel arches.

The case was adjourned until 17 May and Mr Lemprière was released on bail.
