Recruitment checks ‘now in place’ after diabetes centre boss lied to secure job

Last week, Andrea Kim Ellis, the former head of the Jersey Diabetes Centre, was struck off by the Nursing and Midwifery Council after it found she falsified claims about having a master’s degree in diabetes from the University of Warwick, as well as other qualifications.

The panel heard that during her interview with the States in August 2013 neither ‘panellists at the interview’ nor ‘Health’s human resources department’ verified Ms Ellis’s qualifications before she was awarded the position.

During Tuesday’s States sitting, Deputy Jackie Hilton asked Health Minister Andrew Green whether he was ‘satisfied’ with the recruitment process in his department.

Senator Green said: ‘The quick answer to the Deputy’s question is that I am now satisfied with the changes that have been put in place following a number of problems.

‘I would remind Members that that particular problem was one of failing to produce appropriate evidence of qualifications, and that took place in 2013.
