Watchdog to review commercial waste charge

As part of the 2016 Medium Term Financial Plan Addition – an updated spending plan – the States approved an in-principle decision to introduce charges for non-domestic solid and liquid waste.

Now, the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel has said that it will be launching a review after some details of how the charges will be imposed were released.

The Infrastructure Department has put forward plans to charge businesses, charities and other organisations, such as schools, about £150 for every tonne of solid waste – which includes builders’ rubble, furniture and plastics – that they throw away.

A separate waste-water charge of £2.27 per cubic metre is also being proposed.

As part of the review, Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel will be called to give evidence to the panel.
