Stores stock up as freight service is cancelled

Commodore Goodwill, which operates a daily freight service between Portsmouth and the Channel Islands, requires essential maintenance on Sunday and will not operate its usual service to Jersey and Guernsey that day.

Instead, Condor said that it would prioritise the arrival of all food into the islands on Saturday and Monday to ensure that supermarkets are stocked.

Mark Cox, chief operations officer at the Co-op, said his company had been informed about the problems on Tuesday.

‘We are expecting a busy weekend, given it is a bank holiday, but we have been able to increase the volumes coming in. We are hoping we will have sufficient stocks.

‘We were able to adjust orders and stock will be arriving on Saturday morning. For such a busy weekend it is a bit of a concern but they have given us early warning,’ he said.
