Islanders asked to help fund Nepal medical centre

The Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey is aiming to raise £44,000 this year to go towards the building of a new facility in East Nepal, an area which has been devastated by earthquakes.

In April 2015, Nepal was struck by shock waves which killed nearly 9,000 people and injured around 22,000.

To date, the Jersey trust has helped build two schools in the mountainous country, raising more than £140,000 locally. Jersey Overseas Aid matched the money raised by the trust pound for pound.

A number of fundraising events have been planned throughout the year including a memorial walk, a history talk and a climbathon, during which Islanders will be able to climb up and down the stairs of Mont Orgueil Castle.

Frank Falle, who served in the army for 30 years and as a Ghurka officer for six, is a member of the Jersey trust and said he hoped that Islanders would support them in their latest quest to raise money for those without access to medical treatment in Nepal.

Anyone interested in attending any of the events can contact Mr Falle on 855117.
