The family who just love the rain

However, the Norman family from St Brelade have achieved just that by recording rainfall at exactly the same time, in the same location, every day for 100 years.

Currently keeping up the tradition are Mary and Peter Norman, who have lived at La Sergenté since 1986 and have braved rain, snow and hail to take the rainfall measurement. Previously it was recorded by Mrs Norman’s mother and a total of 12 generations of the family have kept the tradition going.

This week, in recognition of the family’s commitment, Stuart Herridge, regional networks manager for the UK Met Office, presented the couple with a barometer and a weather chart from the first day the measurement was taken from that location.

The recordings were originally collected by farmers, who used them to judge when to plant their crops and gauge how the season was going to turn out.

The reading has been taken at 9 am GMT every day since and the Normans said they were very happy to carry on the tradition.
