Warning after first big seizure of powerful stimulant

Drugs courier Lee James Barratt, from Dartford, was jailed this week for trying to import £400,000 worth of the relatively unknown stimulant, which is sometimes cut with highly addictive crystal meth.

Barratt, who was also found with hundreds of thousands of pounds’ worth of MDMA tablets and cannabis resin, was jailed for 14 years.

Today Gary Le Neveu, assistant director of frontiers and investigation for Customs, said the drugs Barratt tried to import were of 80 per cent purity – a particularly potent batch.

Mike Gafoor, a consultant drugs expert and the former head of the Island’s Alcohol and Drug Service, said he was aware of the crystal substance being available in Jersey and warned that it could be even more lethal than conventional ecstasy.
