Tree to celebrate saving park from hospital threat

The West of Town Community Association secured 5,000 signatures when they launched a petition to get the park removed from a list of potential sites for the new Hospital last year.

Now, a year after the green space was removed from the shortlist, an oak tree is to be planted in the park.

Mary Ayling-Phillip, chairwoman of the group, said: ‘I felt it was important that we did something for the people who saved the park. We always felt the States never fully explained why the People’s Park made the shortlist in the first place. We organised a meeting at the Town Hall which became quite a lively debate, and we managed to save the park from being a potential site for the new hospital.’

The tree, a Quercus Rubus, which is the official state tree of New Jersey, is due to be planted this Thursday at noon – 150 years to the day that the land was bought from the then Constable of St Helier.
