Man is arrested over refugee comments

The States police arrested the 55-year-old yesterday on suspicion of committing an offence under the Telecommunications Law and he will now appear before a parish hall inquiry.

The Centenier presiding at the inquiry could choose to fine him, release him or charge him to appear at the Magistrate’s Court.

Malcolm Ferey, the head of Citizens Advice Jersey, said that the arrest demonstrated that Islanders who posted allegedly discriminatory comments on the internet could not escape the law.

Hate crimes – offences driven by prejudices against a person’s race, religion, age, gender or disability – can be reported to the States police by calling 612612 or online by visiting report-it.org.uk and clicking on the States of Jersey police tab.
