The Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, and Assistant Magistrate, Peter Harris, said they had seen a number of young motorists appear before them after crashing cars or being caught speeding because they are ‘excited’ and keen to show off in front of their friends.
Mrs Shaw recalled the case of a 17-year-old who flipped over his mother’s car on the Five Mile Road in July shortly after passing his test. The Magistrate’s Court heard that the accident has had a significant impact on the lives of two teenage passengers. One of the girls broke her back and neck and now finds it difficult to walk.
The driver, who may not be named for legal reasons, was sentenced last week to 150 hours’ community service and was banned from driving for 30 months.
