Children’s mental health: Is exam stress a factor?

Deputy Louise Doublet made the comments after statistics released by the Health Department yesterday revealed that one in ten Islanders aged between five and 16 has a mental health problem, and many continue to suffer into adulthood.

Speaking to the JEP, the Deputy, who worked as a nursery, reception and supply teacher for six years, said that the statistic was ‘very surprising’ and could be caused by the increased stress that young Islanders face.

She said: ‘That is two or three children in every class at school. I think it is great that there is investment going into mental health services but we need to look at how we are living and the pace of life that we’ve got.’
