No plans to reveal consultants’ earnings

Senator Andrew Green made the comment after it emerged last week that NHS England wants to compel all its hospitals and trusts to publish a register of the private earnings of their consultants from next April.

Under the proposals the register would disclose whether a doctor is earning less than £50,000, between £50,000 but under £100,000 and over £100,000 from private sources.

NHS England chairman Sir Malcolm Grant said that the proposal was not ‘an attempt to curb private work by consultants’ but to bring in ‘transparency’.
